El Royo is a village located in the floodplains of the Cintora River, between the regions of El Valle and Pinares, and has a long-established tradition of livestock production. In this area, at the foot the Cebollera mountain range though at great altitude, there are large pasturelands known as quintos (a quinto is a pastureland where five hundred sheep graze). Thousands of Merino sheep grazed these lands and it is one of the starting points of the complex system of cattle trails that formed the Galiana Drovers’ Road.

Some traces from this period are the manor houses with coats of arms and some of which have arched entrances. Entering the village there is a stone cross, a typical element found at crossroads that seems to look like a medieval pillory (in Spanish, rollo). However, this pillory isn’t the reason for the village’s name due to the fact that royo comes from the Aragonese word that means “red”.

According to traditional legends, the late Gothic style chapel Nuestra Señora del Castillo was built on top of a high hill, few kilometres away from the village so it could be seen by all and the shepherds could listen to the bells throughout the entire region. From the chapel you can see a panoramic view of the region. The icon was buried so the Moors couldn’t see it and when the people who knew this hiding place died, the virgin appeared next to the chapel and a shepherd saw her. It is said that the virgin of the castle is the “sister” of the virgins of Las Fraguas and Lomos de Orio, but they got mad at each other and decided to never see each other again although they wanted to be close enough to listen to the bells ring from the three chapels.

The church of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza has a Baroque altarpiece that was done by Francisco del Río in 1618.
