This small village in the region of El Valle is located in the north-western part of the province and receives water from the Douro River and the lower part of the Cuerda del Pozo reservoir, and is surrounded by the mountain ranges of Carcaña to the south and Cabrejas to the north.

The best things to see in Hinojosa de la Sierra are the castle, the Palace of Hurtado de Mendoza and the Hinojosa Lagoon.

The castle was built in the 15th century, and it was not only just a fortress, but it was a baronial castle that belonged to the Mendoza family. Structurally speaking it is worth mentioning the Keep, the only fortified and defensive feature along with the defensive wall that surrounded it.

The Palace of Hurtado de Mendoza is a beautiful Renaissance style palace with a rectangular floor plan and built with ashlar stone. The most interesting aspects are the western and southern façades, this last one being the main entrance to the palace through which you must go through a big courtyard. There is an ashlar stone doorway with two loopholes on either side of the door. Another structure that is still standing, though it is almost in ruins, is a fortified tower.

The environmental importance of the Hinojosa Lagoon is very significant due to the fact that it is considered a “service station” for migrating birds in the winter, thus becoming a great spot for bird watching.
