There is a popular saying that goes “Almanzor lost his drum in Calatañazor”, (en Calatañazor perdió Almanzor el tambor), which means that he lost his status of unbeatable, and was defeated there.

This small village, that seems to have been frozen in time, is atop a rock that dominates the plains of the Abión river. Throughout history, Calatañazor has witnessed many intense battles, being that it was a frontier line, though nowadays one can relish not only in its historical charm, but also in its lovely natural spaces, one of which is the nearby juniper tree forest.

Its steep medieval streets and its humble homes made of juniper framework or branches, mud or adobe and, in the best of cases, bricks, give Calatañazor a feeling of travelling back in time to the Middle Ages, creating a harmonious ensemble of great beauty.

If you want to travel even further back in time, nearby there are remnants of the Voluce, a Celtiberian settlement charged with history and legend.

What is left of the castle are some of the walls and the foundation walls of the weapons courtyard. From this point, you can see the vast plain called the “Blood Valley” (“Valle de la Sangre”).

Aside from the village centre, it is worth mentioning the Romanesque church of Nuestra Señora del Castillo. Exiting the village you can see the chapel Ermita de la Soledad, also of a Romanesque style that has a door without tympanum.
