Santa María de Huerta is located on the south-east side of the province of Soria on the border with Zaragoza. It is in the valley of the Jalón River and is half-way between Zaragoza and Madrid.

This village exists thanks to the Cistercian monastery that is there, the only one in the province of Soria, and there lives a community of Bernardines. This monastery is the main historic-artistic interest in the village, and inside you can see a simple Herreran cloister, the Romanesque parlour, the proto-Gothic or Tardoroman church, the Gothic lower floor in the Knight’s Cloister, as well as the extraordinary refectory, whereas on the upper floor, the style is Plateresque and you can see perfectly-executed icons.
