Santa Cruz de Yanguas is a municipality of the Sorian region of Tierras Altas, located in the Baos river basin. The municipality is formed by three villages, Santa Cruz de Yanguas, Villartoso and Valdecantos, this last one being uninhabited. It is located 1,226 metres high and is characterised by rough winters where you can see snow. Its traditional architecture is made up mostly of ashlar stone houses.

In Santa Cruz de Yanguas you can find a church dedicated to the Mystery of the Holy Trinity (Misterio de la Santísima Trinidad), although most of its cultural heritage is dedicated to conserving the Icnitas or Tridactyl dinosaur prints. Near these prints there is a gigantic replica of a Stegosaurus that roamed the Icnitas Route (Ruta de las Icnitas).

Locals celebrate the Holy Trinity in May, whereas on the first Saturday of September they celebrate Virgen de las Escobillas.

There they celebrate two almost lost traditions: pig slaughtering and charcoal production, and shepherds still take their flocks on the Transhumance through the Eastern Sorian Royal Drovers’ Road. Besides these century-old traditions, they also celebrate other ones such as the stick dances (danzas del paloteo) which were rediscovered twelve years ago after having been disappeared during half a century.

Its location and the natural spaces that surround it make Santa Cruz de Yanguas a perfect place for relax and play. Next to the Baos River you can find the Valdarcel Park near a rustic Roman bridge surrounded by ashwood, poplar and walnut trees, among other varieties. This recreational area has a playground, fountains, barbecues and picnic tables.

There are also many short distance hiking paths that include mushroom routes like Prado de la Solana-Santa Cruz de Yanguas (3.6 km) and Los Zarzosillos-Santa Cruz de Yanguas (15.8 km). On these routes, you will be able to enjoy beautiful landscapes of lush mountains with pine, beech, oak and holly trees.

Many of the spaces you will see in Santa Cruz de Yanguas are part of the eco-network, Red Natura 2000, such as the Cidacos and its effluents’ riverbanks, the Urbión and Cebollera mountain ranges, both declared Places of Community Interest. The Urbión Mountain Range is also considered a Special Protection Area for Birds.
