Sorian Iberian Long Distance Footpath GR-86

Description |  Towns |  What to see |  What to do |  Where to stay |  Where to eat

The Sorian Iberian Footpath is a circular route that goes through almost all the province. It goes throughout the mountain ranges on the northern border and extends to the south following the Douro’s course connecting with the tributaries in the Central System and the Jalón Valley. It also reaches the most representative peaks of the Sorian Iberian System: Urbión and Moncayo.

Along the way, other long distance footpaths such as the GR-93 “Rioja Mountain Ranges” footpath, the GR-90 “Zaragozan Iberian System” footpath and the GR-260 “La Calcenada” footpath, as well as several short distance footpaths and other touristic routes throughout the province.

There are a total of 933 kilometres separated into 39 legs, 6 diversions, 6 variants and 1 branch that range between 6 and 27 kilometres.

It is a natural route that joins many generally ancient paths such as drovers’ roads, carriage tracks, country roads or even Roman roads. At the same time, this route aims to bring back to light the long forgotten historic and cultural heritage from Soria’s past. All these paths are the legacy of different chapters in Soria’s history and they were used since the dawn of time. Depending on the period they had different names and were used for different purposes due to the physical factors of the land.

It is probable that many of the initial routes were made by ancient wild herbivores while migrating and then used as drovers’ roads adopted by the Mesta that then became official tracks for carriages and then later on became Royal Drover’s Roads to finally end up as the current roads.
