EVERGREEN BEAUTY

Sorians wanted Soria to be green and green it became. The intense pine mixing with oak in one of Spain’s biggest forest masses watered by several rivers. This area boasts of having two natural parks, the Lobos River Canyon and the Laguna Negra and the Urbión Glaciers.

The Soria Verde Route, as its own name suggests, offers an itinerary through the greenest parts of the province starting from the capital where you can go on the Burgos road (N-234) towards Abejar, known as “La Puerta de Pinares” (the portal to the pine grove) in search of the land of Alvargonzález. Accompanied by Machado’s verses about a parricide, you will then move on to Vinuesa, the entrance to Laguna Negra. When you arrive to the town, a sign off to the right will indicate the way to this mystical place. On the same road you that leads to Montenegro de Cameros, there is a great spot to go skiing on top of the Santa Inéshill, but right before you get there, if you take a path to the left, you can reach the lagoon and hike all around the area and visit remote places such as the source of the Douro River.

Leaving behind these beautiful stone villages, you can go on the narrow roads that lead to picturesque towns such as Molinos de Duero or Salduero. A little further along the road are Covaleda and Duruelo de la Sierra that sit at the foothills of the Urbión Peak and offer many hiking paths to go up there.

Navaleno and San Leonardo de Yagüe await among fountains, meadows and parks with great recreational areas. It is worth stopping at any of the village’s restaurants to enjoy a meal with local products such as roast beef or mushrooms.

The Lobos River Canyon Natural Park starts off in San Leonardo and passes through towns such as Casarejos, Talveila, Vadillo and Santa María de las Hoyas. We recommend going up to the Galiana lookout to get a great view of the impressive landscape.
