Icnitas Route

Description |  Towns |  What to see |  What to do |  Where to stay |  Where to eat

The Icnitas Route in Soria is an outdoor in situ exhibit on dinosaurs and their footprints (called icnitas). There is a visitor’s centre, the Palaeontology Centre of Villar del Río, a recreational area in San Pedro Manrique and 15 archaeological sites perfectly prepared for visitors.

This space is located in the northern part of the province of Soria, in the midst of a unique natural environment that lets you learn about dinosaurs out in the open. Once you’ve passed the Oncala Mountain Pass (SO-615), you will find a series of villages that all aim to preserve these ancient reptiles’ fossilised footprints.

In Santa Cruz de Yanguas, right next to the Gothic parochial church of Santísima Trinidad, there is an impressive replica of a Stegosaurus that welcomes us to the village. Following the tracks left behind by biped dinosaurs, we reach Bretún. A replica of a Triceratops leads us to the site of La Matecasa, the most visited one in the area, and in Villar del Río a Brachiosaurus invites us into the village to visit a palaeontology centre that analyses and exhibits the unique phenomenon that is the collection of Sorian icnitas. With the Cidacos River flowing at your side, you will reach Yanguas, the ultimate mountain top village with a not only a collection of icnitas but also a great repertoire of landmarks such as the River Gate, a Military Gothic gate, the arcaded town square, the tower of San Miguel and remains of its Arabic castle and the church of Santa María, custodian of a Christ icon that is strongly worshipped in the area. Nearby, in the small village of Fuentes de Magaña there is the biggest scale model of a dinosaur in the world. This particular species is what is known as an Apatosaurus.

The museum as well as the sites and the adventure parks have informative panels along with life-sized replicas that help you understand their way of life in a fun way. This makes this route a must-do for all dinosaur-lovers and nature-lovers alike.
