What is poetry? And you are asking me? Poetry… is you.
Solitude is beautiful…if you have someone to tell it to.
~Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer
Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer was born in Sevilla in 1836. He married Casta Esteban, from Torrubia, Soria, and spent long periods of time in Noviercas as well as in the monastery of Veruela on the other side of Mount Moncayo. There he wrote his romantic collection called Cartas desde mi celda as well as several legends about the villages in that area.
Just by reading his lovely legends, you can tell that Soria and Mount Moncayo inspired Bécquer. One of his legends about a white roe deer takes place in Beratón, a Sorian village on the skirts of Mount Moncayo. La Promesa takes place in Gómara and Los Ojos Verdes around Almenar.
El rayo de luna takes place in Soria capital in the ruins of the monastery of San Polo and on the hillside called El monte de las Ánimas.
He lived an unsteady life of frail health and economic struggles until he became a journalist and auditor, though he was never happy professionally. This is why he turned to writing, becoming a renowned author for his great talent in terms of poetry.
