University of Santa Catalina (El Burgo de Osma)

In 1550, Pope Julius III signed a Papal Bull to order the foundation of the University School in El Burgo de Osma. This building was then under construction until 1563 and later on, it was renovated in 1779. Both its floor plan and its façade show a Renaissance style, and the feeling of symmetry is well present among all the architectonical features and works of art on the frontispiece. The arched doorway is decorated by carved columns which have streaks on the upper part, whereas on the lower sections they are decorated with scientific motifs. Above the archway, there is a niche that has a sculpture of the Patron Saint, Santa Catalina, which is surrounded by several coats of arms of the donors and ribs, which mean that the building was built “at their own expense”. On the upper cornice, there is the imperial coat of arms of Felipe II, the king who included the University under his Royal Patronage. Inside the University there is a central quadrangular courtyard surrounded by double-archways that are supported by smooth columns. The arches on the lower floor are rounded, while the ones on the upper floor present a rather Tuscan style. In this patio, you can also see the coat of arms of the Patron and several gargoyles.
