Tapestry Collection (Oncala)

In the church of Oncala there is a tapestry collection based on cartoons that Princess Isabella Clara Eugenia ordered to Peter Paul Rubens in 1625 for an original ensemble dedicated to the Convent of Las Descalzas Reales of Madrid.

There are a total of eight tapestries in this series called Apoteosis Eucarística. Among these it is worth mentioning The Triumph of Faith and The Triumph of the Eucharist. They have the distinctive Brussels Brabant mark (between two Bs), and the signature of the weaver, Frans Van den Hecke (FVH), an upholsterer from Brussels, dean of the weavers’ guild and the upholsterer of the Court. The tapestries are made of hand-spun wool and silk, and the weaves are intricate and detailed, using up to 75 or 80 threads per lineal decimetre. In Oncala there are two more tapestries that belong to a different series which represent love allegories. They were woven with wool and silk in Brussels in the 17th century. On the lower trim you can see the mark of the city, although it does not have the artist’s signature.
