Royal Hospice (El Burgo de Osma)

When Friar Joaquín de Eleta was the advisor of King Charles III and then the Bishop of Osma, the Seminar and the Royal Hospice were built thanks to his direct sponsorship and Royal Patronage. Both of these monumental buildings were designed by Luis Bernasconi, Sabatini’s assistant, and they show a robust and sober style.

The original building was erected in 1785 and finished five years later at the request of Joaquín de Eleta to be used as a home for the needy and homeless, so it functioned like a “House of Mercy” (Casa de la Misericordia). In 1793, it was occupied by the Royal Chamber of Breeders of Soria and Burgos who built an annexe that was used as a wool treating facility up until 1803 when this chamber left the Hospice.
