Old Hospital of San Agustín (El Burgo de Osma)

Monument since March, 1999.

In 1468, Bishop Pedro García de Montoya founded a hospital in El Burgo de Osma specifically for pilgrims and the sick. It was located in the garden of Nuestra Señora del Espino in order to keep it far away from the town to avoid diseases from spreading. The hospital was inaugurated in 1701 under the sponsorship of Bishop Sebastián de Arévalo y Torres, and the main builders were Ignacio Moncaleán and Pedro Portela, though it is not certain who was the architect that designed it.

The hospital’s floor plan is quadrangular with an arcaded courtyard in the centre which follows the Herreran style of the Austrian house although it also presents some Baroque elements making it the meeting point between aristocratic sobriety and traditional folk architecture. The splendid symmetrical façade contains two niches that hold the statues of Saint Sebastian and Saint Francis; the first one because the bishop had the same name as the Saint, and the second one because he belonged to the Franciscan Order.

In the centre of the façade above the main entrance is the coat of arms of Bishop Montoya, located on top of the cantilevers supported by columns that frame the niche where the sculpture of San Agustín is. There are towers on either side topped with capitals and the coat of arms of the prelate which give the ensemble a feeling of exaggerated Baroque style. The Hospital of San Agustin currently is used as the town’s Cultural Centre, complete with services such as the Tourist Information Office, the Municipal Library, exhibit rooms, the Uxama Archaeological Centre, and it is also used as the headquarters for many local cultural associations.
