Monastery of San Polo (Soria capital)

Recently declared a monument.

The ancient church of San Polo is what is left of the monastery that once belonged to the Knights Templar. Located on the Douro riverbanks, amongst vegetable gardens, is this small monastery which, along with the Knights Hospitaller in the San Juan de Duero monastery, protected the main entrance to the city. The church of San Salvador in Soria also belonged to the Military Order of Calatrava. The walls of the San Polo Monastery’s chapel are all covered in plants which give this place a feeling of romanticism. In the area, we can also find many Romanesque features, and Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer used this place as the main scenario in his legend “El Rayo de Luna”. Although the monastery is now private property, you can still enjoy a walk along the river and pass through the tunnel that goes straight through it.
