La Fuentona Natural Monument

This natural monument is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in the province of Soria.

To get there, all you have to do is go on to N-122 towards Valladolid, and 30 kilometres in, turn right towards Calatañazor. Past this village, you’ll arrive at Muriel de la Fuente, and from there on, you’ll see the signs that indicate where La Fuentona is.

This lagoon’s pristine waters are the source of the Abión River that flows through the region of El Burgo to end up in the Ucero River.

La Fuentona is a karst sinkhole connected with underground currents from the calcareous platforms of Calatañazor. Its waters are so crystalline that is seems like it’s just a puddle, however, this cenote is actually about 50 metres deep and it runs hundreds more until it reaches an underground river.

Cenotes and lagoons have always been a topic for legends, considered to be places where monstrous creatures live, lurking in the shore waiting to swallow up a passerby. Other fantastic creatures that were said to be in La Fuentona were the undines; water nymphs that attracted young men to the cenote with their voices and beauty.

For more information, visit La Fuentona and Juniper Forest of Calatañazor Park Visitor’s Centre.
