Garagüeta Holly Forest (Arévalo de la Sierra)

It is the biggest holly forest in the Iberian Peninsula and in southern Europe. The Garagüeta Holly Forest includes 406 hectares of forest, 180 of which are a continuous mass of pure holly that grows more or less like a labyrinth, forming domed areas where roe deer hide and thrushes hide. Its environmental value is quite extraordinary.

Scientists believe that this holly forest formed naturally due to the degradation of oak and beech forests in the area.

In order to get there, you must go on N-111 towards Logroño reaching Almarza. From that point on, take the detour towards Gallinero, Arévalo de la Sierra and Torrearévalo, and from any of these last two villages, you will find signs that indicate the way to the holly forest.

In Arévalo de la Sierra, there is an interpretation centre that focuses on the holly forest and its environment called the Garagüeta Holly Forest Visitor's Centre. This park house first opened its doors to the public in 2014 and is part of the Park House Network of Castile and Leon. There you can learn about all of Garagüeta’s secrets.

The centre is located in the middle of the village of Arévalo de la Sierra near the Town Hall. The village’s narrow streets make it advisable to leave the vehicle in the free parking lot located next to the Chapel of Santo Cristo (there are signs that indicate where both the parking lot and the centre are located).

The centre is in the old teacher’s house, and it is a bioclimatic building which was purposely built to be energy efficient.

A company called Acebarillo plans routes through the holly forest as well as other activities related with holly. You can learn more about these activities on their website.
