Defensive Wall and Gate of Las Heras (Monteagudo de las Vicarías)

Monument since 1931.

Monteagudo de las Vicarías is a village characterised by the defensive nature of its layout. Located on a hill and on the border between the medieval Crowns of Castile and Aragon, this village has witnessed many battles and treaties such as the 13th-century pact between Sancho of Castile and Jaime of Aragon to arrange a marriage between the crowns. This citadel then went on to be under the control of the mercenary, Du Guesclin, as a reward for helping Henry of Trastámara against Pedro I of Castile. Soon later it went back to the hands of the crown, and then it belonged to the Hurtado de Mendoza family. Nowadays, what is left of the citadel’s defensive wall is the Gate of Las Heras.
