Church of Santo Domingo (Soria capital)

Monument since June, 1931.

According to specialists, the foundations of this Romanesque temple, initially consecrated to Santo Tomé, were placed in the 12th century above a previous building which was most likely from the beginning of that century. However, not all the structures in the church date back to that same century due to the fact that over the years it had been remodelled and many structures and decorative elements were added to it. The sanctuary and the transept show a late Renaissance style that dates back to the 16th century. Near the transept, there is a section that corresponds to the 12th century that extends up to the base of the naves and is what is left of the original Romanesque temple of Santo Tomé. There is also a tower from the same period that is attached to the northern part of the section.

The church of Santo Domingo was built using the façade of the church of Notre-Dame la Grande in Poitiers as a reference. The main façade is divided into two levels that have an ensemble of twinned arches on either side. On the upper level, there is a central rosette above the level with blind archways that frame the main entrance. The area surrounding the rosette is divided into eight sections of columns with their respective capitals where you can see decorated arches. On the domes above these, you can see little figures and scenes that are quite intricate. Nowadays, the church presents various elements that are of great artistic value, such as the façade which is considered to be its most valuable feature.

In the centre of the gate, there is a Christ Pantocrator under four archivolts and keystones. On this frontal section, you can also see the four Evangelists along with Mary and Joseph. Thos Christ Pantocrator is included with other four unique examples in the world of icons known as Trinidad Paternitas, which is the Holy Trinity with Joseph holding Jesus. The church’s capitals are supported on duplicated columns and show passages from the Old Testament, the Creation of Adam and Eve, the Birth of Jesus, the Resurrection, and many more.

Open only during mass.
