Church of San Millán de la Cogolla (Cabrejas del Pinar)

The church dedicated to San Millán was rebuilt after a fire destroyed the original Romanesque building in the 18th century. What is left of the original structure is the base of a tower that has a domed room and a blind rounded archway.

The new church is a monumental building with Baroque features and a Latin cross floor plan. It also has a tower with many rounded openings. The nave is separated by transverse arches that rest on an ample cornice which is supported by cantilevers decorated with plant motifs. The pilasters that support the cantilevers are attached to each other, multiplying the shafts and the capitals are decorated with acanthus leaves and scrolls.

The church is covered by a dome with lunettes just as the transept’s crossing, each of which are decorated with geometric and plant motifs. A semi-spherical dome covers the transept and is placed on top of spandrels with medallions decorated with figures. A series of stucco angels and flower garlands embellish the sections framed by the ribbing. The choir which is located at the foot of the temple is located atop a dome and a lowered arch, where the structures and the decorative features are differentiated with either white or yellow colours just as in the rest of the building. The most noteworthy features are the altarpieces in the semi-dome, the Baroque decoration from 1755 and the golden decorative elements from 1760.

There is a baptismal font which is possibly Romanesque. It’s shaped like a truncated cone and is decorated with saw-tooth incisions on the opening, original small arches in the central section and three figures which are either praying or crucified that could be a representation of the Calvary.

The southern façade also has a pointed rounded arch with moulding framed by Solomonic columns, spandrels decorated with scallops and plant motifs under an ample floating entablature above pilasters. In the attic, there is a niche with a scallop-shaped opening that holds a stone statue of San Millán. Other sculptures and carvings decorate the rest of the façade.
