Church of San Miguel Arcángel (Caltojar)

Monument since April, 1981.

Due to the fact that the Romanesque church of San Miguel Arcángel dates back to the late Romanesque period, in the first third of the 13th century, it shows some Gothic features. The main entrance faces south and is guarded by a tower. The façade is divided into four rounded archivolts on columns on the inside and on the outside, they are on saw-tooth columns. There is a diamond shaped drip cap that finishes the structure. The archivolts are placed on tiered jambs and columns topped with plant motif capitals. There is also a unique tympanum on a rounded arch and pendant capital that is decorated with a keystone of San Miguel.

On the northern façade, there is another entrance although it is closed off. On this façade, the archivolts are simply decorated with embossments and chamfers on jambs and columns topped with identical capitals.

There is a modified Romanesque tower that tops this temple immersed in the town. The walls are made of good quality ashlar and the church is separated into three naves and a sanctuary with three apses. The central nave stands out for the ampleness of the lateral sections, and outside the triple apse has been covered due to restorations carried out after the side of the epistle and the gospel was removed.

Nowadays we can only see the central apse which is beautiful from the outside. This central apse is located on top of a tall podium divided into five sections with triple columns that reach the cornice decorated differently on two levels of small arches on modillions. This decorative style is repeated and simplified on the cornice of the presbytery.

Inside the church, the vaults form into pointed arches and there are cross-shaped pillars attached to the columns topped with simple schematic capitals. The pointed and folded arch of triumph is pointed gives way to the presbytery that is covered with a pointed barrel vault, whereas the central apse is covered by a pointed semi-dome. Inside there are also many artistic elements such as a Romanesque baptismal font on a conical base that does not present any decorative features, a well-produced pulpit, a 16th-century major altarpiece and a Gothic Calvary.
