Church of San Juan de Rabanera (Soria capital)

Monument since 1929.

From the outside of this 12th-century church, we can see that the apse is divided into four rows thanks to fluted pilasters that seem to be quite classical in style and which are finished off with plant motif capitals. On the two centre walls, there are great pointed openings, whereas on the lateral ones they are blind double rounded arches which are decorated inside with flowers, streaks and geometric carvings. The cornice is supported by decorated canisters and the southern wall, near the transept is bell-shaped with two archivolts that are supported by columns decorated with plant motifs. On this façade, there is a tympanum decorated with various types of rosettes. The western wall was part of the church of San Nicolás which is now in ruins, and there we can see decorated capitals and a tympanum. The capitals on the left side represent scenes from the Life of Jesus, the Passion and the Resurrection, whereas the ones on the right represent the life of Saint Nicholas. On the tympanum, there are high-reliefs without hardly any figures except the saint surrounded by his entourage of priests in a style that seems to suggest the transition to the Gothic period. In the apse, there are tombs with two sculptures that were originally placed in a different place: one of Saint Peter whose original location is unknown and appeared during the restoration of the church and another one of an Evangelist which, original, had two blind arches that disappeared on the northern wall of the presbytery. There is also a Mudejar tomb inside the wall. This church also has a museum with a collection of valuable pieces, such as the magnificent frontal part of the Romanesque altar.
