Church of San Juan Bautista (Ligos)

Heritage of Cultural Interest since 1995.

This 13th-century Romanesque building only has one nave and a semi-circular apse preceded by a straight section. The nave, presbytery and apse are all made of stonework reinforced with ashlar on the edges. There is a modern belfry with three openings for the bells, and the entire cornice is decorated with balls that are placed over cantilevers carved with various themes and tiered rinceau. Like other churches, this one faces south and in the centre of the nave, there is an access door with five rounded archivolts decorated with diamond points, indented discs, intertwined vegetation and undulating branches. The arches gravitate over double shafts and rough capitals that reproduce animals facing each other. Two continuous imposts, decorated with notes and balls, separate the arches from their bases. In the apse, there is a lovely Romanesque window under a rounded arch over simple capitals and shafts, cladded with imposts decorated with diamonds. Inside, the apse and presbytery are half barrel-vaulted with pointed quarter spheres. There is a line of simple imposts that reach the arch of triumph, a perfectly rounded arch that rests on various capitals over smooth columns.
