Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Los Llamosos)

Heritage of Cultural Interest since 1994.

It is one of the oldest churches in the entire province of Soria. It was built in a Romanesque style and Muslim influences. It has only one nave and a sanctuary formed by a trapezoidal presbytery and an ultra-semi-circular apse. Most of the building is made up of stonework although there are some sections that have been plastered. Later renovations modified the structure making the nave bigger and adding on a belfry and portico. The cantilevers that are still located under the nave and sanctuary’s cornices are decorated with plant motifs and are placed helicoidally. Other decorations that can be found are anthropomorphic and animal heads, contortionists and other human figures. Inside, the arch of triumph is placed on pilasters and semi-columns topped with capitals with rolled trims. The presbytery is closed by a barrel vault and the apse with an oven. On the plastered walls inside there were mostly ochre-toned murals that reproduced stonecutting and biblical scenes such as the Last Supper or the Arrest of Jesus in the olive grove. These murals have been dated back to the 14th century, in the Linear Gothic period, and have been recently restored. There is also a baptismal font with a conical base which is smooth on the bottom part, decorated with rounded arches and four-petal plants on the spandrels of the middle section. The opening is cut out in a saw-tooth pattern with embossments. This temple’s structural elements and constructive archaism have been the main study subject for investigators who have proposed several hypotheses in relation to its chronological dating. For some, it is a clear example of construction based on Mozarabic trends. For others, it was built in the first quarter of the 12th century. Others even suggest that the temple’s archaism means that the builders used outdated techniques and place its origins towards the end of the 12th century.
