Chapel of Jesús (Almazán)

This chapel was built over the ancient parish of Santiago, very close to the Villa Gate that takes us to the Douro River.

It is on top of a platform surrounded by a solid wall and has a Neoclassical façade lined with pilasters and buttresses that are used to support a bell tower. One of the temple’s eight stone walls is used as a frontón court where the local kids play. This octagonal floor plan is typical of the Romanesque churches that can be found on the Santiago route, and over this octagonal structure, there is a bas-relief decorated with square motifs and topped with a dome with eight openings that illuminate the inside. There are eight spherical sectors that crown the ensemble on top of which there is a weather vane shaped like a cross. On the beautiful 18th-century Baroque doorway there is the village’s coat of arms, and inside the chapel is decorated with interesting Baroque altarpieces. In the centre, you can see the image of Jesus of Nazareth, the patron saint of Almazán. For three centuries the locals have worshipped this image and the chapel as a whole due to the fact that Virgen del Campanario was was a predominant figure.
