Caliphate Tower (Noviercas)

Monument since April 22nd, 1949.

The Caliphate Tower is an impressive defensive and watchtower that is still in very good shape. This Berber tower was erected in the 10th century and is about 19 metres tall. Inside there are 4 floors, and each floor is about 12x9 metres. Just like most towers, the entryway is elevated about three and a half metres from the ground. Two different construction techniques were used to build this tower: fitted stonework and rammed earth masonry. On the highest part of the tower, the stone changes colour which means that this part was added on in a later construction. During the 19th century it was used as a prison and nowadays you can find the Interpretation Centre there where you can learn about the Tower Route.
