Augustóbriga Interpretation Centre (Muro)

Archaeological site declared Heritage of Cultural Interest since 1994.

On this two themed phase tour, you will learn about the existence of this Roman city, a mansion that was on Via XXVII of the Antonino Route that connected Caesaraugusta (Zaragoza) with Asturica Augusta (Astorga). This educational design made up of informative panels, reproductions, scale models and audio-visual material lets the visitor learn about this city’s evolution from its Celtiberian origins up to the present. Schools can come here on field trips and enjoy other activities such as the guided tour of “Cultural Muro” where they can learn about the church, the medieval watchtower, the castle and its defensive walls and the Roman fountain. Another tour they can enjoy is “Environmental Muro” where students can go on the local footpath SLC-SO 90 and visit the archaeological site and the fountains of Augustobriga, or on the other local footpath SLC-SO 97 where they can visit stone quarries, go up to the Taraviela Lookout and visit the Roman Via. There are many educational workshops where kids can learn about Celtiberian-Roman culture: tesserae, graffiti, paintings, Roman games, etc.

On the lower floor there are many exhibits: Mount Moncayo, the Celtiberian’s sacred mountain; The Land of borders; The Origin of the Celtiberian World; Arekoratas and the new tessera found in Muro; The Conquest, origin of the Roman Hispania; The Legions and the Roman Army; Augustobriga, the re-foundation of the city; and Via XXVII on the Antonino Route.

On the upper floor you can enjoy these other exhibits: Augustobriga and the Roman World; Mapping the city; Streetlife; Gods and ancestors; Homes and family life; Mosaics, painting with stones; The Early Roman Empire; and The Medieval Occupation.
