El Valle

Description |  Towns |  What to see |  What to do |  Where to stay |  Where to eat

The Valley of the Tera and Razón rivers, also known as the “Butter Valley”.

This region called “El Valle” is known as the “Little Sorian Switzerland” due to a picturesque landscape of an open green valley. One of Soria’s most famous products comes from here, “Sorian Butter”.

The valley is located between the Cebollera Mountain Range and the mountain ranges of Tabanera and Carcaña. This all contributes to make a landscape of soft slopes covered with beech and oak and the occasional willow or ash tree on the riverbanks of the Douro, Merdancho, Razón and Tera.

We suggest a route that goes along the Razón, Tera and Merdancho rivers to discover this fertile land full of flora and fauna.

Passing the Tera River, you must see the Fortified Mansion of San Gregorio, Gallinero, Torrearévalo, the Garagüeta Holly Forest (one of the most important holly forests in Europe), Santos Nuevos, an impressive forest of ancient oak trees, Almarza and the neighbouring town of San Andrés de Soria.

The valley’s other river, Razón, leads the way to small villages with whitewashed stone mansions. Some villages worth visiting are Tera, Valdeavellano de Tera, Molinos de Razón, Sotillo del Rincón, El Royo and Hinojosa de la Sierra.

The Merdancho route is much more modest, but that doesn’t take away its incredible beauty. There are many villages and places full of history, for instance, Numantia.

Another place well worth visiting is Garray, where the ruins of Numantia are located. From here on, you can follow the course of the Merdancho River that leads to Renieblas, Almajano, Aldealseñor and Castilfrío.
