Toro Jubilo (Medinaceli)

Regional Tourist Interest.

In November, on the night of the closest Saturday to the 13th, the beautiful town of Medinaceli celebrates its Celtiberian rituals honouring bulls and fire.

A strong odour of fish and mud impregnates the town square that becomes the setting for the Toro Jubilo.

An enormous bull, covered in mud from head to toe, carries a metal pole called gamella on its horns with two great balls of fire lighting at midnight.

This ritual which could have been created as an initiation process occurs with the animal tied to a post with a rope which a young man of Medinaceli must cut. The ashes fill the square where four bonfires dedicated to the town’s Martyr Saints illuminate the way for the youngsters on this night where earth, fire and ancestors all come together.
