La Soldadesca (Iruecha)

Regional Tourist Interest.

This is the only representation of Moors and Christians in Castile and Leon.

La Soladesca in Ireucha is the most characteristic celebration of this town regarding patronal celebrations in honour of Virgen de la Cabeza. It is currently known as “Battle between Moors and Christians” and was declared a Regional Tourist Interest festival in 1991.

The first documented evidence there is on the celebration date back to the first third of the 18th century (1728), although it is very likely that “La Soladesca”, as a “battle between Moors and Christians”, began to be celebrated around 1198, when the soldiers of the villages in the Solorio Mountain Range, commanded by a local Lord, defeated the Almohad expedition nearby. Maybe it was a simple clash, but this event surely was celebrated by the surrounding villages up to the point that it became a tradition to commemorate it each year.

On the Saturday of the second to last weekend of August at 5:00 p.m., Iruecha sees their village being invaded by Muslim troops who despise Christians and try to steal the icon of the Virgen, profaning their celebrations and trying to impose their religion and traditions. This produces a strong reaction among Christians who defend the image of the Virgin Mary. After a verbal confrontation between the two warring factions, there is a sword fight. One of the latest novelties is incorporating an infantry army of 40 people that give La Soladesca the colour and spectacular nature that it needed to become a referent among local festivities in Soria during August. After the Christian troops receive help from divine intervention, the battle finishes with their victory and the conversion of the Moors.

The representation continues with an enjoyable satire starred by characters that represent the town’s mayor and priest, which is a parody of local authority and locals’ customs.
